Protein: An Essential Macronutrient

Protein is one of the three macronutrients that fuel your dog's body with energy. Fat and carbohydrates provide energy as well. But, let's focus on protein here. Protein is comprised of substances called amino acids that are essential to your dog's health. Your dog requires adequate protein for two main reasons:

  • To provide your dog with amino acids that he/she cannot synthesize on its own

  • To dispense essential amino acids that are required for growth and maintenance

Amino acids are necessary for:

  • growing and repairing body tissues

  • making hormones

  • providing an energy source

  • maintaining healthy fur and nails

  • building muscles

  • boosting the immune system

  • sustaining a normal digestive system

Amino acids also provide components necessary for gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis is the process in which glucose is synthesized when dietary intake of carbohydrates is insufficient. All animals require a source of glucose. When dogs are fed adequate amounts of high-quality protein, glucose needs will be met without the addition of carbohydrates.

What are the best digestible sources of protein for your dog?

Animal sources of protein (beef, poultry, fish, e.g.) generally have a higher digestibility than plant sources of protein (peas, lentils, chickpeas, e.g.). Digestibility of protein may be variable depending upon the breed and lifestage of your dog. Heat processing affects digestibility as well. In general, the overheating of proteins can decrease digestibility. Moderate heat may actually increase digestibility, but, can reduce and/or destroy some nutrients.

The inclusion of soluble fiber (from foods such as beans, fruits and vegetables, and seeds) is known to decrease protein digestibility. However, some high-fiber foods may provide some great health benefits for your dog, so long as the amounts are not in excess.

How much protein does your dog need?

According to the National Research Council (publisher of Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats), your dog requires 20 grams of protein for every 1000 calories of metabolized energy.

Bottom Line: Protein provides essential amino acids your dog needs to thrive. You can be assured that this level of protein is easily reached in all recipe formulations by Fresh For Fido.
